The first part of the trip took students to Paris where they engaged with leading experts in arbitration, trade, human rights, and legal technology, gaining firsthand knowledge of international legal practices. The journey began with an in-depth exploration of arbitration at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), where sessions covered the ICC’s role in global dispute resolution, best practices for arbitration clauses, and the growing importance of mediation as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism. A mock arbitration scenario allowed students to apply their learning in a practical exercise

The cohort also delved into climate litigation and corporate responsibility during a session at Alerion Avocats, analyzing landmark cases and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive’s impact on business practices. This was complemented by a masterclass on Artificial Intelligence’s influence on the legal profession, where discussions focused on AI’s ability to streamline legal research and contract analysis while raising critical ethical considerations.

The second half of the trip was held in Geneva. A highlight of the trip was the visit to the World Trade Organization (WTO), where students attended sessions on trade regulations, intellectual property, fisheries subsidies, and the intersection of trade and human rights. Experts provided insights into the evolving landscape of international trade policy, technical barriers to trade, and key dispute resolution mechanisms. Additionally, a guided tour of the WTO allowed students to see firsthand how the institution functions on a daily basis.

A lecture at Maison de la Paix by Jürg Lauber examined the United Nations Human Rights Council’s challenges in balancing legal imperatives with geopolitical considerations, providing valuable perspective on human rights law in practice. At the United Nations (UN) Headquarters, students gained deeper insights into global governance and diplomacy, exploring the role of international agreements in shaping legal and political frameworks.

Beyond academic engagements, the trip fostered networking opportunities and cultural exchange. A closing dinner at Café du Centre brought together LL.M. students from different specializations, accompanied by Professor Yuliya Kaspiarovich, reinforcing the program’s interdisciplinary and global nature.

This immersive experience underscored the LL.M. in International Legal Studies program’s commitment to equipping students with both academic knowledge and practical exposure to real-world legal challenges. The trip not only broadened their professional networks but also deepened their understanding of international legal frameworks, preparing them for impactful careers in global law and policy.
