Mahmoud Ezzamel researchers and teaches in the field of management accounting and accounting history. He is especially interested in understanding how contemporary organizations, whether in the private or the public sector, develop and make use of management accounting systems. These organizations include universities, schools, hospitals, and political bodies in the public sector, and manufacturing and retailing companies in the private sector. He also explores how institutions of the past, ranging from 18th century Spain to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, made sense of their daily activities through the use of accounting and how these accounting practices produced order in society. He draws on a variety of organizational and social theories to theorise his observations of accounting practice in these contemporary and ancient organizations and institutions. His teaching reflects these interests and locates the study of accounting into its broader social, political, cultural and economic contexts.

Mahmoud Ezzamel has been joint editor of the leading journal Accounting and Business Research for a period of 13 years ending in 2005, and has edited several special issues of scholarly journals.
