IE University has announced the appointment of Lee Newman as Dean of IE Business School. Newman succeeds Martin Boehm, who for the last nine years was Dean of Programs and then Dean. Newman will begin his tenure in June of this year.

Newman joined the faculty of IE University in 2009 and in the following year became the founding Dean of the school known currently as the IE School of Human Sciences & Technology (HST). As Dean of HST, Newman has successfully driven the School’s strategy and growth. It currently serves 1,500 students annually from more than 100 countries. He oversaw the development of HST’s 12 Master's programs and five Bachelor’s degrees, all career-focused degrees taught in English and designed to prepare students for the many new jobs that have arisen in the New Economy. These include programs in customer experience, talent development, positive leadership, business analytics, and digital transformation.

Originally from the United States, Newman has an interdisciplinary PhD from the University of Michigan in Psychology and Computer Science which focused on the relationship between neural processing and decision behavior in experience-based learning. His research has utilized both experimental and computational methods. In addition to his PhD, Newman holds an MBA and Master in Technology & Policy from MIT, as well as a Bachelor in Engineering from Brown University. Newman has published in the areas of cognitive neuroscience, artificial intelligence and business management in journals such as The Neuroscientist and Management Science.

Prior to joining IE, Newman served as engagement manager with McKinsey & Company in Chicago, where he managed projects in sectors such as mining, manufacturing, and consumer goods that focused on the reengineering of operational and organizational processes. During the first years of the internet boom in the 1990s, he founded (and later sold) two successful technology startups: one of the first social media platforms and an innovative company offering ERP services delivered via the internet.

"The business world has been revolutionized by artificial intelligence and behavioral sciences and it is with this in mind that I am particularly proud to announce the appointment of Lee Newman as Dean of IE Business School. Given his expertise in these two areas, combined with his professional experience, I have no doubt that Lee will continue to advance IE Business School’s position as a leading international educational institution," said Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University.

"Throughout the years that I have known Lee, he has demonstrated solid strategic vision and a great ability to lead teams, to anticipate trends and innovate – all of which will enable him to successfully lead IE Business School into the next stage of its evolution.”
Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University

Iñiguez thanked Martin Boehm on the completion of his mandate as Dean: “I want to extend my deepest appreciation to Martin Boehm for his dedication and performance. During his four years as Dean of IE Business School and five years as Dean of Programs, the Business School has grown, diversified and strengthened its quality and international presence. His intelligence and accomplished leadership have resulted in multiple new programs and initiatives at IE Business School, which deserve our enduring recognition. Martin has been an excellent, loyal and committed collaborator, and has led the School with exemplary competence. His focus on digital teaching initiatives and pedagogical innovation prepared IE Business School to provide an excellent learning experience even during the COVID19 pandemic”. “During this time, Martin has been an excellent team builder, fostering solid support networks within the IE community and around the world. He was elected Chair of GMAC’s Board of Directors and has served as a member of other international networks”, Iñiguez added.

Liquid learning model

IE Business School has two decades’ experience in online education, was a pioneering institution in Europe when it launched the first online Masters, and has unique training spaces such as the WOW Room, the classroom of the future where students from all over the world connect to follow its programs. The quality of the institution's online programs is recognized by international media such as QS and the Financial Times, which rank IE Business School first and second in the world in their rankings of Online MBA programs. According to IE University President Santiago Iñiguez, "Our experience in designing hybrid programs has put us in a privileged position to react quickly and adapt to the new way of working, studying and living in a liquid world.”

This academic year, IE University has promoted its Liquid Learning model that allows students to attend classes in person or connect online simultaneously from their home countries through screens installed in its classrooms. In addition, since last September, all of the institution's undergraduate and graduate programs have been taught face-to-face, which sets IE University apart internationally and enriches the learning experience of students from more than 140 countries.
