Social Sciences: The Human Lens
Vice Provost for Global Academic Partnerships & Alliances at IE University, María Eugenia Marín, on the vital role of social sciences ahead of the upcoming CIVICA Global Forum.
In a world grappling with complex and interwoven challenges—such as climate change, poverty, rapid technological disruption, migration, and conflict—the social sciences play a critical, though often underappreciated, role in crafting sustainable solutions. Unlike the natural sciences, which focus on understanding the physical world, the social sciences offer a human-centric perspective. This human-centric lens is essential for addressing global problems that are deeply rooted in human behavior and belief systems. Whether it is the consumption patterns that fuel climate change or social structures that perpetuate poverty and inequality, understanding why people act the way they do is a prerequisite for change. By integrating these perspectives, global initiatives can avoid one-size-fits-all approaches and ensure that solutions are inclusive and just.
Driving Innovation through Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Perhaps the greatest strength of the social sciences lies in their ability to work alongside other fields. Addressing global problems demands interdisciplinary collaboration. This is where higher education institutions (HEIs) play a key role. Global problems are complex and multifaceted; they cannot be solved within the silo of a single discipline. HEIs provide a unique space where diverse disciplines can collaborate to tackle complex issues holistically. By encouraging interdisciplinary teaching and research, universities foster innovation that integrates technical, social, economic, and cultural dimensions. Moreover, universities often serve as bridges between sectors—linking academia, industry, government, and civil society. These partnerships enhance the real-world impact of research and education.
CIVICA Global Forum
The CIVICA Global Forum, to be held at IE Tower in Madrid on 6 and 7 May, will contribute and foster dialogue on these important topics. CIVICA - The European University of Social Sciences, comprised of 10 leading European social sciences universities, will draw from its vast network of academics and experts, and join top Voices from industry, government, and civil society to engage in discussions on some of these critical issues. In an era defined by global challenges, instability, and rapid technological change, higher education institutions hold a unique and powerful position. As hubs of knowledge creation, innovation, and leadership development, universities and colleges are not just observers of global issues; they are critical actors in the quest to solve them.
SHAPE and STEM: Developing the Next generation of Changemakers
What should future generations of global leaders be learning? Universities are instrumental in shaping the next generation of leaders. Through education, students gain not only technical knowledge but also critical thinking skills, ethical awareness, and a global perspective. This is where an interdisciplinary, holistic approach is vital. The CIVICA Forum will offer a thought-provoking discussion to explore the critical need for interdisciplinary education that integrates STEM and SHAPE (Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts for People and the Economy) to tackle complex global challenges. The world’s most pressing problems cannot be solved through technology or science alone. They require an understanding of the human condition—our motivations, institutions, cultures, and relationships. Social sciences and the humanities offer this understanding, equipping us with the tools to not only comprehend global challenges but also to transform them—by placing human behavior and social systems at the center of the solution. This is what drives societal transformation.
Higher education institutions are not merely centers of learning—they are engines of global change. By generating knowledge, cultivating leaders, fostering collaboration, and embodying ethical and sustainable practices, HEIs play a vital role in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. As the scale and urgency of global problems continue to grow, so too must the ambition, responsibility, and relevance of higher education.
