Flavia Cuccaro

About me

I’ve always had a strong interest in both law and tech. I specialized in Law and Innovation in the fourth year of my law degree before participating in an Erasmus student exchange at IE Law School, where I focused on understanding Tech Law. I’m also a keen activist and advocate for access to tech: I’ve organized conferences to raise student awareness on environmental and climate change issues and have volunteered to help educate older people about the use of new technologies.

"Some of these methods of reasoning—if I had not had the opportunity to deal with people whose cultural backgrounds are so different from mine—I would otherwise never have acquired them."

Blending law and technology to foster innovation

Italian law student Flavia Cuccaro is a passionate believer in innovation. So much so that it’s what set her on her educational journey—one that’s so far taken her to Piedmont, Rome and Madrid. In the fourth year of pursuing her law degree in Rome, she chose to specialize in Law and Innovation; however, it was during her four-month international exchange at IE Law School that she really got the opportunity to take a deep dive into the subject. She was able to explore different aspects of intellectual property law including copyright, patents and trademarks, while also analyzing contemporary legal issues such as artificial intelligence, Web 3.0, blockchain technology, the metaverse and more, from a legal point of view.

She describes the Master of Laws (LL.M.) as “particularly stimulating,” citing its combination of theory and practice as the defining characteristic of its unique approach to learning—one that unifies the study of teaching materials and real cases. Actual cases are analyzed in group work as part of the program, treating students as if they were colleagues working on real cases at a real law firm, says Flavia. This was the firsthand experience she was looking for; she highlights her meeting with Pepper, IE University’s library assistant robot, as another example of the invaluable, practical approach the program takes.

But it was more than just the academic excellence of the program that Flavia enjoyed. The countless opportunities to meet new people and network through activities organized by the numerous clubs active in both Madrid and Segovia also stood out for her. From the first week of classes at IE Law School, she says, you’re teambuilding with program colleagues in much more than just an academic environment. As an example, she specifically remembers a basketball practice session held at the IE Athletic Center!

Such bonds were to prove quickly useful, as Flavia found herself discussing case law with a particularly eclectic group of colleagues during the program. She was especially pleased to come across such diversity at IE Law School, being impressed by the different approaches her classmates had to reaching resolutions to a given issue. She would never have acquired some of those methods of reasoning, she says, if she had not been given the chance to deal with such a broad range of cultural backgrounds among her peers.

Overall, Flavia’s experience at IE Law School confirmed and increased her desire to become a lawyer. That’s still a plan for the future, however; right now, she’s keen to continue pursuing an academic path. After all, the subjects that particularly interest her are, now and more than ever, of interest to legislators in Europe and beyond.

Asked to offer advice to any prospective student of the Master of Laws (LL.M.), Flavia recommends that they immerse themselves completely in the reality of the program and every experience that follows from it. She says it’s important to grasp as many of the countless opportunities on offer as possible, “surfacing again” from time to time to take stock and be grateful for the incredible experience they’re having. Sound advice from somebody who’s been there!
