Master of Laws (LL.M.)

Above and beyond borders of a single legal system
As the legal sector transforms, lawyers are required to have a new set of knowledge and skills in order to stay ahead of the curve. The Master of Laws (LL.M.) at IE Law School is a program that’s uniquely positioned to immerse legal professionals in a fast-paced global context.

10 months

Defined by its comparative methodology and international orientation, the Master of Laws (LL.M.) gives students hands-on experience in skills such as cross-border transactions and transnational law to propel their international ambitions. Students can either specialize in one of three major legal fields—International Business Law, International Dispute Resolution, or Intellectual Property and Technology Law—or earn a General LL.M. that provides an overview of all three fields. Being able to choose their specialization gives students the definitive training for continued success in the area of law they’re passionate about.

In addition to this highly specialized expertise, students will gain broader soft and hard skills in the areas of management, leadership, technology, communication, negotiation and more. These skills will directly impact graduates’ potential in the sector, as recruiters increasingly look for well-rounded “T-shaped” lawyers.

The context: The new world of law

Driven by technology and globalization—and exacerbated by the knock-on effects of the post-COVID-19 world—the legal industry is undergoing a pivotal shift.

The legal sector is transforming into a transnational industry that is tech-enabled, data-driven and multidisciplinary, challenging traditional approaches to practicing law. With increased reliance on digital platforms in the wake of COVID-19, the legal landscape is increasingly dominated by disruptive new players who are focused on delivering legal services that cater to client needs. With this new reality come new challenges and unprecedented opportunities, promising unique career paths and possibilities for corporate legal professionals, experts in Intellectual Property and Technology Law, and outstanding litigators.

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) is designed from a global perspective, using a comparative approach to develop legal leaders’ mindsets and problem-solving skills. With the program’s extensive content, students can build a solid foundation, which will be of great value as they go on to their specialization. They begin by discovering the differences between common law and civil law systems, before tackling key issues regarding conflict of laws, European Union law and international law. Alongside this, students develop their professional skills and reflect on professional ethics issues, preparing them for success in distinct organizational environments.

Our Master of Laws (LL.M.), a sure path to success

This LL.M. is unique among top law schools globally since it focuses sharply on analyzing and developing solutions to large, multijurisdictional, highly complex corporate transactions.
