Borja Torres, IE Law School alum, wins the EY Young Tax Professional of the Year competition
For years, global consulting firm EY has been organizing an international competition that seeks to reward and promote the development of future generations of tax leaders.

This year, the Young Taxation Professional Award went to Borja Torres Moll. Borja has a degree in business administration and management from the Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir, and is currently studying the Doble Máster en Acceso a la Abogacía y Procura + Asesoría Fiscal de Empresas (LL.M.) at IE Law School.

Borja decided to pursue a master's degree in the legal field at IE Law School because of the institution’s methodology, and the number of professionals that make up the faculty.

"At IE Law School, classes are given by several successful professionals. This helps you see a reflection of what you want to do and be in the future; they deliver classes from practical knowledge, just as it was in the competition."

A few months ago, Borja decided to participate in the international competition organized by EY. The competition challenges participants to see the business world in global terms, learn to work with people from all over the world and understand how business is done in different cultures—all while helping them develop the skills expected of tomorrow's leaders.

Taking place in two phases, the competition begins in the country or region where the participant studies or works. A global round is then held with the selected winners of each local phase. Borja participated in this first phase in December 2023, where he worked virtually on a practical case that he was tasked with solving. After demonstrating his knowledge and skills in front of EY partners, he finished this phase in the top 10, becoming Spain's finalist to enter the global stage.

"At IE Law School, one thing that undoubtedly helped me win this competition was the case study methodology they use. Not only do you learn; you also face the unknown, which constantly pulls you out of your comfort zone. It prepares you for the future."

The global phase of the competition took place in February in Vancouver, Canada, where the presentations and performances of the ten local finalists were evaluated to select the 2024 winner.

Borja opted to demonstrate his knowledge on the subject of taxation, but with creativity and originality—skills that are undoubtedly demanded of today's legal professionals, and that are promoted at IE Law School.

"In the evaluation criteria of the final phase of the competition, I saw that in addition to the technical and theoretical aspects, they also valued creativity and originality. I came up with the idea of, ‘What better way to write an opinion of AI than using AI to do it?’" – Borja.

This competition helps showcase the knowledge and skills of young professionals in the tax sector and highlights the most in-demand skills in the current market.

In the words of Rocío Rodríguez Caballero, associate director of Talent Attraction and Acquisition at EY Spain: "At EY, we’re very proud of the talent that comes out of our universities. Borja is proof of this talent, especially as he has demonstrated the skills, knowledge and aptitude to be named world champion of the Young Tax Professional of the Year 2024, out of 39 finalists and more than 60 participating countries and regions. We’re excited to see everything he’s going to achieve in his brilliant career with us."
