IE Law School launches new Energy & Environmental Law specialization
A high-level panel marks the introduction of the new concentration within the LL.M. in International Legal Studies.
On February 18, IE Law School hosted the panel "Regulating for a Sustainable Future" in Madrid to mark the launch of its new Energy & Environmental Law concentration within the LL.M. in International Legal Studies program. The event brought together leading voices from the legal and corporate sectors to examine how regulation is shaping the transition toward a more sustainable, secure, and resilient global economy.
Santiago Martínez Garrido, Secretary General and Secretary of the Board of Directors of Iberdrola, and José Giménez Cervantes, National Managing Partner and Head of Public Law and Regulated Sectors at Linklaters, took part in a panel moderated by Eugenia Castrillón, Vice Dean of Programs at IE Law School. The discussion provided attendees with first-hand insights into the professional opportunities and challenges at the intersection of law, energy, and sustainability—core pillars of the new specialization.
Martínez Garrido emphasized that energy regulation has moved beyond traditional industrial or environmental frameworks. In today’s geopolitical context, he noted, countries must build secure and resilient energy systems. That requires legal frameworks capable of enabling investment, guaranteeing supply and adapting to rapid technological change.
Giménez Cervantes highlighted that advising in the energy sector today goes far beyond interpreting regulations. It requires a deep understanding of market dynamics, anticipating risks, and helping clients navigate complex geopolitical and economic environments. Energy and environmental regulation, he stressed, are no longer niche areas but sit at the center of global debate, economic transformation, and sustainability challenges.
The panel underscored the growing demand for lawyers equipped to operate in highly regulated, strategic sectors, reflecting IE Law School’s commitment to preparing legal professionals for one of the defining fields.
