The renewal of the Pérez-Llorca/IE Commercial Law Chair reinvigorates international research on commercial law

The renewal of the Pérez-Llorca/IE Commercial Law Chair reinforces the institutions’ combined commitment to legal research on commercial law issues that impact international markets. For the last ten years, this initiative—which was co-created by IE Law School and law firm Pérez-Llorca—has been dedicated to commercial law research and knowledge-sharing with the wider legal community.

Over the years, the Chair has become a reference point in Spain and a forum for reflecting upon today’s most pressing legal developments. The initiative has held seminars in Madrid, Barcelona, New York and Miami with the participation of academics, judges and lawyers who have reflected upon and deepened their understanding of contemporary legal topics. Some of the topics that the Chair has dove into include corporate governance from a European and US perspective; the interaction between arbitration and jurisdiction; and acquisition strategies in Europe and the US.

"Together we share a global vision of commercial law and commit to the international training of the best lawyers for the legal profession,” affirms Soledad Atienza, Co-Director of the Chair and Dean of IE Law School.

Moving forward, the Chair will continue to take a comparative and international approach to commercial law, always considering different legal systems and countries.  As a center for debate and reflection on regulatory changes and trends in commercial law, the Pérez-Llorca/IE Commercial Law Chair is dedicated to internationalization. The Chair will offer seminars and insight into topics that transcend European law, such as, “The Private Enforcement of Competition Law: Damage Claims,” with the participation of representatives from the European Court of Justice and the National Commission on Markets and Competition in Spain (CNMC), to name a few. Participants in the Chair include Francisco León, Of Corporate Counsel at Pérez-Llorca and Professor of Commercial Law, and Sara Sánchez, Professor of Commercial Law at IE University. Over the next few months, the Chair will host various virtual seminars from IE University’s WOW room. This futuristic classroom brings together cutting-edge technologies to create a collaborative work environment for participants.

In terms of research, the Chair will continue to employ an international outlook on legal issues, combining European Law and Comparative Law. Some of the topics currently being addressed include, “The Private Enforcement of European Legislation on State Aid” and “Blockchain and Marketable Securities: the Lex Rei Sitae Doctrine.”

“It brings IE Law School great satisfaction to renew this agreement with Pérez-Llorca. Together we share a global vision of commercial law and commit to the international training of the best lawyers for the legal profession,” affirms Soledad Atienza, Co-Director of the Chair and Dean of IE Law School.

Co-Director and Pérez-Llorca partner Constanza Vergara echoed these thoughts: “The renewal of this Chair, organized in collaboration with IE Law School, reflects the firm’s desire to contribute to legal research and imbue it with our day-to-day practical experience.”
