IE Paper Pavilion, at Open House Madrid

The IE Paper Pavilion, the only building by Pritzker 2014 laureate Shigeru Ban in Spain, will be part of Open House Madrid 2017.

Japanese architect Shigeru Ban designed this temporary pavilion at the IE Campus in Madrid in 2013. The building is made from 173 cardboard tubes and was constructed in the Serrano garden to serve as a multi-purpose space for events, meetings, talks and exhibitions. Shigeru Ban designed a system of cardboard roof trusses and columns which were inexpensive to install and can be easily recycled when the building is eventually dismantled. Also, the materials used were manufactured in Spain to provide a boost to local professionals and students from the IE School of Architecture and Design who collaborated in the process.

“There is no difference between doing a big or a small project. The most important thing is taking advantage of the local technology and materials, as it has happened in this project”, said Shigeru Ban.

"IE culture and the work of Shigeru Ban have in common their commitment to sustainability, the humanist spirit and the union of multiple cultures," said Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University when the Paper Pavilion was inaugurated in 2013. "The pavilion is destined to the exchange of ideas, in a light, diaphanous, elegant and functional space, with an ephemeral character that reminds us of the need for permanent transformation of knowledge", he added.

On 29 and 30 September, the doors of the Pavilion will be opened for those interested in discovering the building and finding out more about its design and construction.
