In order to thrive in a constantly changing world, which is every time more tech-driven and business models are being redefined, it is essential for architects and designers to acquire multidisciplinary skills in order to adapt and excel in this world. Our faculty talks about the relevant skills architects and designers of the future will need. Learn about what our professors from the Master in Architectural Management and Design have to say:

Peter Murray

Chairman at NLA – London’s Centre for the Built Environment

“Communication in the digital age. According to Murray, communication and marketing skills are even more relevant now than when people worked in their own locality. Currently, architects and designers are able to communicate with the rest of the world in order to display their work and brands. Thus, this is a vibrant tool they have to nurture their business, and direct it in the desired direction. There are all sorts of elements evolving in a very exciting way, such as augmented and virtual reality, which enhance the ways in which architects and designers are able to communicate what they do.”

Balvinder Singh

CCO and Partner at BOOSTER & AERDRON

“A balance between soft and hard skills. Usually, hard skills are taken for granted as education has been greatly based on these and due to technical ability, they are easier to obtain. However, soft skills such as leadership are harder to obtain, and that is what we try teach to our students as they seek to become future leaders and grow their own business. The skills that can’t be replicated by robots are becoming more valuable every time such as management, empathy, ethics, creativity and dealing with conflict. Besides those skills, there are more specific abilities around the core subjects of architecture and design relevant for the future such as big data, cybersecurity, smart cities, Internet of Things, among others. Thus, future architects and designers should strive for a balance among the hard and soft skills – the soft will become more valuable as they can’t be replicated and the hard will tend to be more specific.”

Caroline Cole

Director at Colander Associates Ltd.

“A variety of aspects that come into play in order to create great design. According to Cole, for future architects and designers, collaborative working is key. It is key for each one to have their area of expertise and respect and trust others with different areas to do their work as a wide range of skills is necessary to achieve good design. In a team, someone needs to have a strong creative passion in order to be combined with people who are able to transfer that creativity into a viable project that can be realized.”

Joseph Pistrui

Founder of Nextsensing Initiative

“Knowing how to create value for customers. The way we create value for customers is changing in important ways and the challenges pharmaceutical, energy and medical professionals are facing will soon be faced by architecture and design professionals – for which business models are changing. Thus, entrepreneurial management is necessary to have the tools and frameworks in order to explore and experiment with the different ways we create value for customers.”
