The Skills Designers & Architects of the Future Need (MSD Faculty)
Technology is quickly transforming the environments around us. The way we behave, work and experience life is changing. In order to embrace this change, professors of the Master in Strategic Design of Spaces discuss the skills future architects and designers will need. Read about the advice they provide to future architects and designers:
Elvira Muñoz
Director of Interior Design at AECOM
“Whatever you define now will change very rapidly. The most important aspect is to propose solutions that are scalable, adaptable and customizable so these can grow with the client and their needs. I am mostly proud of the projects that I’ve done that allow the client to grow with the space that I have provided. One of the key skills to be developed is the ability to listen and understand the trends in order to provide design solutions that will take into account the possible future. These solutions need to be holistic, and demonstrate every side of the business is understood, as well as overarching, to connect where we are now to the future. This is the business mindset which should be taught, and it should come along with curiosity in order to provide design solutions which are more meaningful.”
Grace Eun
Senior Associate at Clive Wilkinson Architects
“There are a variety of skills and backgrounds that come into play when designing, thus there is not a specific skill to mention, but rather a skillset. Nowadays, there is not really one solution, so architects and designers should be great at creating concepts and planning. For students, it is very important to have a creative mind and be able to execute their ideas into actual spaces.”
Jacob Benbunan
Owner and CEO of Saffron Brand Consultants
“Those who study disciplines and areas that have an impact on civilizations and society need to be incredibly ambitious with what they learn. The thinking process that goes behind creating requires culture, curiosity and the ambition to learn about stuff that has been going on for many centuries in this planet. My recommendation for students would be to be as humanistic as possible, because at the end of the day this is what makes you a good person.”
Phillip Tidd
Principal at Gensler
“The ability to tell clients stories about how you are going to help them transform their work environment. Usually, clients are working in a particular way they have probably been working on for years and they can’t imagine themselves in a different way. That human power of storytelling helps people overcome the natural fear of change. In addition, being a good conceptual thinker and a diplomat is relevant as you are dealing with a lot of human emotions. In the future, we all have to be aware of the power of the interface between the digital and the physical worlds. We are already living in a world where this might be regarded as a symbiotic relationship.”
