This study examines why founder CEOs drive higher innovation performance, extending upper echelons theory. Analyzing 200 Chinese high-tech SMEs, it finds that founder CEOs leverage ambidextrous firm strategy, with effects strengthened by a sense of calling. Findings highlight the ‘founder advantage’ and contribute to cross-cultural management research.Â
