Using mathematics to understand the world around us

Ana is studying for the Bachelor in Applied Mathematics, but she hasn’t limited her IE Experience to just mathematics. She considers herself a curious person and has pushed herself to get involved outside of her program as much as possible—meeting people from all over the world and taking part in extracurriculars.

When Ana was looking at different bachelor’s programs, she found the Bachelor in Applied Mathematics stood out to her because of the way of thinking it teaches. Since starting the program, Ana has adopted a new attitude to problem-solving, where she considers different angles to approach a problem and the different factors involved. Her lifelong love of problem-solving made mathematics an obvious choice for a bachelor’s program. She finds numbers fascinating and loves the fact that everything can be explained through mathematics. Ana is in constant pursuit to deepen her understanding of the world around her through numbers.

With this in mind, Ana enjoys all of her mathematics classes, especially calculus and geometry. She loves how concrete they are and how they allow her to really get to the root of a problem. She also enjoys discrete math—which, although less concrete, enables her to explore different sides of the mathematics world.

Ana González | IEOutside of her program, Ana has gotten involved with a range of extracurriculars, notably by starting French language classes offered at IE University. Through this opportunity, Ana has met many more students from outside of her program to enrich her IE Experience. In fact, the diversity of people she has met is one of Ana’s favorite things about studying at IE University. “There are people from all over the world and everyone has completely different life experiences to share. I am learning a lot,” she says.

Hoping to further immerse herself in the IE Community, Ana has some wise words of advice for future Bachelor in Applied Mathematics students. Looking back on her first day at IE University, she tells future students not to panic. Ana was very nervous when she started at IE University but says that as soon as she met her classmates and had her first class, all of her doubts were gone—she knew IE University was the place for her. Thanks to the confidence her teachers instilled in her, Ana decided to take every opportunity that came her way at IE University and enjoy the experience.
