About me

My name is Alexia Gortazar, and I’m half Belgian and half Spanish. I grew up truly internationally—splitting my time between both countries. I’ve also been fortunate enough to study in Ireland and Italy, which has nurtured my open-mindedness and adaptability. I have a background in European and international law, and am passionate about technology, trade and cross-border legal matters.

Gaining first-hand experience with international law

Alexia Gortazar is no stranger to a life of diversity and multiculturalism. Half Spanish and half Belgian, Alexia grew up between Spain and Belgium. Her international lifestyle didn’t end there; naturally, she went on to study abroad in both Ireland and Italy, further developing her open mindset and sense of adaptability.

Her international upbringing forged a strong interest in international law, which Alexia is now passionate about exploring through the lens of business. These interests have led her directly to the LL.M. in International Legal Studies at IE University. Alexia feels the program is dynamic and holistic, helping her gain invaluable insights and experiences as she grows professionally.

Alexia was drawn to the LL.M. In International Legal Studies because of its interdisciplinary approach and emphasis on practical learning. The school’s innovative methods, focus on technology and dynamic networking opportunities were the final deciding factors for Alexia. This type of study, combined with her established passion for international law, allows Alexia to connect theory with practice. The program’s holistic curriculum is the foundation for her long-term goal of advising on cross-border legal matters.

Alexia feels challenged and supported by the community at IE University. She finds the renowned professors and guest speakers insightful and impressive, especially as they provide firsthand industry knowledge based on their experience. Beyond academics, Alexia now also considers her classmates her friends. The highly supportive and energizing atmosphere encourages Alexia on both a professional and personal level.

One of the highlights of Alexia’s studies so far has been her visit to the WTO in Geneva during Immersion Week. She felt the visit gave her an opportunity to witness the intersection of the program’s two tracks—Human Rights & Digital Society and International Economic Law. The insight into how one institution can shape the global and economic landscape has motivated Alexia to continue developing her adaptability and holistic perspective.
