Rafael Puyol Antolín
Rafael Puyol is Vice-president of Institutional Relations at IE Business School, Vice President of the Instituto de Empresa Foundation and President of the Board of Governors of IE University in Segovia, and he also teaches Economic Environment at IE. Furthermore, Rafael is Professor at Madrid’s Complutense University where he teaches Human Geography. Prior to joining IE he served as Rector of Madrid’s Complutense University between December 1995 and 2003, Vice-rector for Academic Programming (1988-1995) Vice-dean of the School of Geography and History (1986-87) and Director of the Geography Department (1981-82).
He is a member of the Population Group in the Association of Spanish Geographers where he held the presidency from 1986 to 2000, also serves as 1st Vice-President of the Real Sociedad Geográfica, Member of the Board of the Spanish Chapter of the Club of Rome.
Rafael was also Vice-President of Madrid Complutense University’s General Foundation, is a trustee of another five foundations and full member of the Hague Club. Full member of the Royal Academy of Doctorates and The European Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been director and member of the Executive Committee of Portal Universia. Mr Puyol is member of the selection panel for the Príncipe de Asturias Award of Scientific and Technical Research and Social Sciences, positions he has held since 1996 and 2008 respectively. He is the former President of the board of directors at Colegio de Estudios Europeos “Miguel Servet” (París); former Vice-President of the Conferencia de Rectores de Universidades Españolas (CRUE).
Collaborator by public competitive examination of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. He also sits on the Editorial Board of Gaceta de los Negocios and Dinero magazine and the Editorial Board of Nueva Revista de Política, Cultura y Arte. He holds the Commander´s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Grand Cross of Aeronautical Merit and the Grand Cross of Naval Merit, and has been awarded with the Nuñez de Balboa´s honorary order, (Panama) and also by the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.
Mr- Puyol also owns the Gold Medals of Complutense University and the Universities of Prague, Bratislava, Anáhuac (Mexico), Havana and Helsinki, as well as holding honorary doctorates from the Universities of Anáhuac, Norte (Asunción, Paraguay), Ricardo Palma (Lima, Peru), San Antonio Abad (Cuzco, Peru), Panama National University, Interamerican University (Puerto Rico) and Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic).
He was awarded the Commemorative Medal of UNICEF’s 50th anniversary, and is an honorary member of UNICEF’s Spanish Committee.
A specialist in demographics, he has authored numerous publications and papers in this field. Overall, he has published 17 books and over 100 articles, and he is a regular TV and radio contributor.
