Laura Barquín Herrero
Born and raised in Burgos, I’ve always had an adventurous soul. I started my journey in Industrial Engineering and have had the chance to develop my career across different countries, including the UK, Italy, Spain, and now France, working in diverse sectors like Automotive, Banking, and Oil & Gas.
Currently, I lead Smart Plant & Equipment Availability initiatives within Michelin's Industry 4.0 team. In this role, I get to collaborate with an incredible team and partners worldwide, driving transformative change and reimagining the future of manufacturing.
In 2022, I was honored to be listed on the 111 List of Nova Talent as one of the most promising young professionals in Spain. Prior to that, in 2020, I received the Impulso a la Industria Conectada Award, which recognized my work in advancing connected industry initiatives.
One of the most meaningful experiences of my career journey so far was being a finalist in the 2023 IE Women Empowerment Challenge. Out of over 500 participants, I was awarded a scholarship to pursue my master’s degree at IE—a true highlight. My time in the EDTX program at IE has been transformative, not only for my career but also personally, as I pursued my dreams alongside inspiring classmates and dedicated professors who generously shared their expertise.

IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU THINK PROGRAM HAS CHANGED YOUR LIFE PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY?
The EDTX program at IE University was a turning point in my life, professionally and personally. It gave me the advanced skills I now use to lead Industry 4.0 initiatives at Michelin and, just as importantly, the courage to make big changes. Inspired by my classmates, professors and learnings, I moved to a new country, joined a new company, and left my previous role when I realized it no longer aligned with my goals. Being surrounded by such a diverse and ambitious cohort pushed me to redefine my aspirations and pursue them with confidence. Ultimately, the program gave me both the skills and the courage to create a career path that truly excites me.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY OF YOUR EXPERIENCE?
It’s hard to pick just one favorite memory because every F2F period was truly unique and special. If I had to choose, though, I’d say the evenings and dinners we shared as a group stand out the most. Those moments of connection, laughter, and bonding outside the classroom allowed us to grow closer and turn classmates into lifelong friends.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY THIS PROGRAM AT IE?
I chose the Executive Master in Digital Transformation and Innovation Leadership (EDTX) at IE because mastering digital transformation is essential in today’s rapidly evolving world. This program offers a perfect blend of business strategy, leadership, and technological expertise. It equips professionals to lead innovation and drive meaningful change across industries. For me, it was the ideal choice to not only deepen my understanding of digital transformation but also to help my company to embrace innovation with confidence and agility.
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES THAT YOU ENCOUNTERED ON YOUR WAY? HOW DID YOUR MASTER PROGRAM AND IE HELP YOU THROUGH THESE CHALLENGES?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was balancing the high demands of my role with the rigorous master’s program, while also trying to maintain a personal life. The schedule, with Saturday classes and a full workload during the week, required significant discipline and time management. Towards the end of the program, I made the decision to change roles and move to a new country—a major life transition that the master’s program helped me approach with courage. The knowledge I gained throughout the program, combined with the support and encouragement of my classmates, gave me the confidence to take this bold step. IE created a transformative environment that empowered me to embrace change and align my career with my aspirations.
HOW HAVE YOU APPLIED WHAT YOU LEARNT IN CLASS IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WORK?
The EDTX program has had a direct impact on my role at Michelin, where I lead Industry 4.0 initiatives. I’ve applied frameworks and tools to improve plant efficiency and manage equipment availability, translating classroom insights into real-world results. Beyond technical skills, the program strengthened my leadership and change management abilities, helping me drive collaboration and innovation daily.
WHAT IS NETWORKING LIKE?
Networking in the EDTX program is one of its strongest aspects. With classmates from diverse industries and backgrounds, every interaction is an opportunity to learn and grow. The program fosters a collaborative environment, where networking happens naturally through group projects, in-person sessions, and events. The connections you make aren’t just professional—they often become lifelong friendships, supported by a strong alumni network that offers ongoing opportunities for growth and collaboration.
How was the experience of doing the Master in a format that allows you to continue working while studying?
The EDTX program’s format was perfect (and challenging at the same time) for balancing work and study. Weekend classes allowed me to apply what I learned in real-time while continuing my career. Although challenging at times, it was rewarding to see the direct impact of new knowledge on my day-to-day work. The support from professors and peers made managing both commitments much easier.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE ABOUT TO BEGIN THE PROGRAM?
Jump in with an open mind and be ready to push yourself—you’ll grow a lot. The program can be challenging, but it’s worth it. Make the most of the amazing network of classmates and professors, stay organized, and manage your time well. It’s a demanding ride, but you’ll come out of it with so much to offer in both your career and personal life.
