Once-in-a-lifetime experiences at IE University

University isn’t just about what you learn in class—it’s also about the extracurriculars, clubs, talks and experiences with people you enjoy. For Bachelor in Economics student, Alan Calderon, the holistic nature of the education he’s been afforded at IE University has been a favorite part of his experience.

Alan loved economics as a subject in high school and chose to pursue a Bachelor in Economics to truly get out of his comfort zone and learn from people of all backgrounds and cultures. He studies at both Segovia and Madrid campuses, and says he truly loves both.

He has certainly excelled in his studies, achieving honors results in the subjects of Probability & Statistics, Programming for Economist I, and Financial Economics & Accounting, demonstrating his achievements as being among the very best in the class. He’s also the class representative for his bachelor’s group.

He says he loves how easy the university makes it to take part in clubs, sports, and campus life. He cofounded the IE University Cryptocurrency Club, which offers informative sessions to help students learn more about and engage with blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. He says the club gained a lot of followers in a short timeframe and people are very eager to learn more about crypto.

Alan says his most memorable experience at IE University so far has been attending the World Travel & Tourism Council Global Summit in Saudi Arabia with fellow students. He says he would never have imagined himself going to Saudi Arabia and learning so much from their culture. They have a different perspective on life, and he was able to meet hundreds of people from all over the world.

Alan Calderon - Student Story | IE UniversityThe Saudi trip focused on sustainable tourism, which he didn’t know existed before this experience. It made him realize how important sustainability is and how small changes in one’s life can have a huge impact on others. It also gave him the opportunity to connect with people from other universities around the world and to build friendships with IE University students he hadn’t yet met.

During the trip he had the opportunity to talk to and shake hands with people who are in charge of some revolutionary projects in the sector. He even got to meet former Mexican president Felipe Calderón, a man he admires. Alan says at the end of the trip most of the students didn’t want to leave Saudi Arabia—it’s a place he’d definitely like to go back to in the future, and perhaps even work there.

Alan says IE University has helped him shape his goals and figure out what he wants to do in the future. He says the university has great events that cover any topic that you might find yourself interested in; through informative sessions, workshops, clubs, and chats with professors, he has been able to envision what professional paths he wants to take and, importantly, which ones he doesn’t.

He believes there’s always something to be grateful for, even in your lowest moments, and lives by the quote that “Life is too good not to enjoy by focusing on the bad things only.” He’s certainly focusing on living a positive life at IE University.
