Labs at IE University

IE Labs are IE University’s alternative to traditional internship placements. There are two types of IE Labs, depending on the experience the student wants to gain.

For students seeking internship placements, the IE Labs provide hands-on, internship-like experience on campus, working in consultancy and research projects for leading companies and institutions in a variety of different sectors.

For students who want to start their own business, the Start-Up Lab offers a platform which helps students to strengthen their business plan, present it to investors, and turn it into reality.

All Labs start at the beginning of the academic year and continue year-round. During the Internship Period from May to June students work full time in the IE Labs and participate in common modules and activities which include seminars for professional skills, weekly presentations of their work, business simulations, and extracurricular activities.

Students work in the IE Labs under the tutorship of professors, while experts provide training in areas like marketing, funding, strategy and legal aspects. IE Labs will also include practical workshops throughout the year led by executives from participating organizations.

IE Labs

The IE Labs are an excellent opportunity for students who want hands-on experience, interdisciplinary knowledge and challenging projects which they can carry out in order to gain professional skills. Students work as consultants for companies, firms and institutions. These companies collaborate with IE University and call on students to carry out specific research projects and strategic analysis and deliver their findings, guided by professors and experts. The aim is to give students valuable work experience, unique knowledge of specific sectors, and the technical and soft skills needed they will need in their future careers.

Corporate Partners Labs, Institutional Partners Labs, and Independent Labswork with companies and institutions in a variety sectors, such as finance, marketing, sports, political campaigns, media and urban development, to list a few.

Start-Up Lab

Many of our students come with a business idea which they are eager launch. The Start-Up Lab serves as an incubator for students’ business initiatives and guides them through the process of creating and starting a business.

IE University is rooted in entrepreneurship and the Start-Up Lab reflects its commitment to empower students who want to turn their ideas into reality. Student must bring a solid business plan to the Start-Up Lab, where they will receive training and experts’ advice to improve their business plan in order to present it to investors.

More on how IE Labs work

All IE University students can begin to participate in IE Labs and the Start-Up Lab at the beginning of the academic year. Visiting and Exchange Students can join during the full-time period from April to June.

A professor will lead each Lab to guide students through their work. Each Lab operates much like a small company, with working hours, timetables and deadlines. Students have a commitment to work for companies on projects and deliver them within the specified deadlines.

In the first two terms students dedicate only part of their time to IE Labs. During the Internship Period, from April to June, students work on IE Labs full time. The daily workload during the full time period will vary, depending on the projects, but will consist of a class or seminar, working on projects, a meeting or a company visit. There are also weekly presentations, when students present their progress on work they are doing.

The IE Labs are long-term projects, which continue the following year with new students. In many cases, students can continue with their research and consultancy projects, using their work for their Final Thesis Project as well.

Credit and recognition

Students will receive recognition in terms of credit and mention of work experience listed in the European Supplement to the Diploma. Depending on the nature of the project, students could also have visibility through having their work published.

Working space and facilities

The Segovia City Council has collaborated with IE University, allowing the use of the city’s Casa de Moneda (Royal Mint) building to house the IE Labs and Start-Up Lab in order to promote innovation and help develop an entrepreneurial mindset in the region.

The ground floor, where the Start-Up Lab is located is always open to the public. There is a show room that offers and ideal space for students to showcase their businesses and projects and trigger interactions with entrepreneurial agents, investors and the public.

The Casa de la Moneda is a cultural heritage building, founded by Felipe II and built by Juan de Herrera between 1583 and 1588, and is considered the oldest example of industrial architecture of its kind in Europe. Renovation was completed in 2011, when IE University converted the Casa de Moneda into an international incubator for innovative businesses.

What I like most about this university is its international atmosphere. Also, being a small university means it feels like I am with my family. Here all fields of study end up integrating; Communication, Business, Architecture…and that way we all learn from each other.

I feel privileged to be studying in such a diverse and inspiring environment. IE University takes both an intelligent and dynamic approach to learning that motivates and requires one to make the most of the numerous opportunities available. In addition to the rigorous academic life, the combination of living in Spain and having an international group of friends creates a totally unique experience that expands your horizons and prepares you for the future.

What I like about IE is the international environment and the culture of entrepreneurship which is deeply engrained in the University's values. The vast resources available to students who are building their own businesses does a lot to foster the entrepreneurial spirit in the student community.

The international community at our University not only provides me with friends and contacts from around the world, but it allows me to sit in a classroom where so many different cultures merge to discuss a topic from multiple angles. This is an experience that made me trust in myself and taught me how to think outside the box.
