How our professors see it

Marta García Aller

Professor of Media Economics & Corporations, Bachelor in Communication, IE University. Journalist, Actualidad Económica.

“One of the perks of working as a journalist is the amount of people you meet every day. You need to keep your wits about you, adapt to the circumstances and always be ready to learn something new. In the editorial department we need to be flexible, have negotiation skills, and above all, be able to make decisions under pressure.

The day to day life of a journalist is one big rush, full of deadlines, articles to be written, photos to be taken, interviews to be done…There are always challenges and very little time to do things in. The media always stretch their resources to the limit, whatever the consequences.

IE University’s Media Economics & Corporations course goes beyond standard course content and focuses on developing the ability to deal with all these situations. Students train daily by writing articles, giving public presentations, preparing debates…Being versatile is a great skill in the job market. The challenge in Media Economics & Corporations is to learn to work under pressure and be creative at the same time. The economy is a means to an end”.

Rubén Enríquez

Professor of Chemistry in Biological Processes, Bachelor in Biology, IE University. Director of Sanitif Laboratory, Managing Director and owner of a bio-pharmaceutical company.

“As a managing director in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical sector, with R&D and business development responsibilities, and experience in large and small companies in Europe and the USA, I have witnessed a very common problem in recruiting talented staff. Young graduates with excellent academic results from the best universities often have difficulty adapting to different positions in the industry and fail to live up to expectations. The problem seems to stem from differences between the candidates’ academic capacities and their business mentality.

New graduates are usually well prepared academically and have very specific knowledge in a particular area. Even so, there are many hurdles they have to overcome when they join the job market in terms of their working capabilities, group leadership and communication skills, which are decisive in achieving objectives.

IE University has a different, global, holistic vision which gives its students the edge over the competition in the job market.

IE University’s teaching methods are oriented towards what the job market actually wants, i.e. more cosmopolitan, complex profiles which combine different areas of knowledge and the personal skills needed to establish a successful career”.

Álvaro Navarro

Professor of Organization and Design: Introduction to Management, Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA), IE University. Owner and Managing Director of CHIEFS, S.L.

“Students in IE University’s Bachelor in Business Administration learn to think and act like entrepreneurs and managers from day one. They are encouraged to lead by example, to be modest but decisive and proactive. They need to be demanding, make the most of resources and set long-term goals whilst controlling every step of the process.

Putting together and promoting a business plan is a challenge that students face right from the start at IE University. Students don’t just study Management, they live and breathe it. Companies need people who can adapt, are willing to make sacrifices and have a passion for detail. Academic knowledge is essential but the ability to build relationships, work as a team and achieve tangible results is more important. Strategy is obviously important, but whether companies succeed or fail is based on what they actually do”.

What I like most about this university is its international atmosphere. Also, being a small university means it feels like I am with my family. Here all fields of study end up integrating; Communication, Business, Architecture…and that way we all learn from each other.

The international community at our University not only provides me with friends and contacts from around the world, but it allows me to sit in a classroom where so many different cultures merge to discuss a topic from multiple angles. This is an experience that made me trust in myself and taught me how to think outside the box.
