Stewart Marvel

Dr. Stu Marvel is an expert in reproductive law and technology, family law, and critical legal theory. She also works on issues related to kinship, vulnerability, and questions of gender-based violence and sexual harm. Before joining IE University Madrid, Marvel held a tenure-track position at Emory University (USA) in the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, where she also served as Director of the Studies in Sexualities Program, a university-wide interdisciplinary research program. Prior to that she was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Leeds School of Law (UK), where she co-directed the Leeds hub of the Vulnerability and Human Condition Initiative – a global research project on law and social justice. She has also been Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the Emory University School of Law, and taught in the Human Rights Program at Agnes Scott College (USA). Marvel received her PhD and LLM from Osgoode Hall Law School (Canada), as well as an MA in Gender Analysis for International Development from the University of East Anglia (UK). She has held visiting scholar positions at Northeastern University (USA); the Centre for Law, Gender and Sexuality at Kent Law School (UK); and the Feminism and Legal Theory Project at Emory Law School, and was a fellow with the Harvard Institute for Global Law and Policy (USA). Previously, Marvel worked as communications liaison at the Korean National Commission for UNESCO in South Korea and served as gender advisor to the Ministry of Women in The Gambia.
