IE Insights Launches “Power & Purpose” Podcast on Leadership in Global Affairs
The new series explores the human stories behind foreign policy, and what it means to lead with integrity and impact.
In a time of shifting global dynamics, IE Insights, the thought-leadership publication of IE University, has launched a new podcast in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), titled Power & Purpose. Through conversations with global leaders and policymakers, this podcast explores the untold stories and life lessons of those working in public service and diplomacy.
Hosted by Amanda Sloat, Professor of Practice at IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs and former Special Assistant to US President Biden, and Nathalie Tocci, Professor of the Practice at SAIS Europe and former special advisor to EU High Representatives Federica Mogherini and Josep Borrell, the show brings a distinctly transatlantic perspective – shaped by the hosts’ long-standing friendship and complementary careers in U.S. and European policy.
“Amanda and I have worked together, and on opposite sides of the Atlantic, for many years,” said Tocci. “This podcast is a continuation of that dialogue, shaped by shared values and distinct perspectives. We’re not just analyzing policy, we’re exploring what drives the people behind it. Our aim is to bring forward the human dimension of leadership in international affairs – something too often overlooked in today’s discourse.”
Power & Purpose offers a behind-the-curtain view of foreign policy decision-making, focusing on the people – not just the positions – driving change. Guests include diplomats, policymakers, analysts, and advocates the hosts have worked with, respected, or found compelling over the years, whether for their insights or impact.
The series highlights personal journeys and often-overlooked perspectives in foreign policy, amplifying voices whose integrity, insight, and lived experience bring fresh thinking to global leadership. While many guests are women, the series takes a broader view, with a spotlight on the human stories behind policy decisions and the values that drive public service.
“At a time when global politics can feel overwhelming, it’s important to remember that thoughtful, purpose-driven leadership is possible,” said Sloat. “With Power & Purpose, we hope to inspire listeners – especially students and professionals in international affairs – by sharing the stories of people making a real difference behind the scenes.”
New episodes are released every other week, offering in-depth conversations grounded in personal narratives and timely political insights. The podcast aims to engage a wide audience interested in international relations, ethical leadership, and public service.
The first two episodes are now available, including a conversation with Federica Mogherini, who served as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission from 2014 to 2019. Upcoming guests this season include Susana Malcorra, Wendy Sherman, and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
Power & Purpose is available on all major platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Production and sound design by Reptile Studios. For updates on new episodes and guest announcements, visit IE Insights Power & Purpose.
