Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi opens the 4th Edition of JLF Valladolid Spain at IE University
Satyarthi shared his reflections on the importance of promoting peace, justice, and human dignity in a conversation with Diego del Alcázar, Chairman of IE.
Madrid, June 11th.- Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, inaugurated JLF Valladolid Spain this morning, a literary and intercultural festival linked to the Jaipur Literature Festival, which is held annually in India. The festival’s opening event took place at IE University’s IE School of Arts & Humanities. In his remarks, Satyarthi shared reflections on the importance of promoting peace, justice, and human dignity. The event brought together leading figures from the academic, cultural, and diplomatic worlds to celebrate the launch of the Spanish chapter of one of the world’s most influential literary festivals.
During the inaugural session, titled The Flawed Arithmetic of War, Kailash Satyarthi spoke with Diego del Alcázar, Chairman of IE, who highlighted the Nobel Peace Prize laureate’s more than four decades of dedication to defending children’s rights, as well as his courage in confronting a social challenge that had long been ignored.
Satyarthi reflected on the human consequences of conflict and the moral responsibility of societies to protect the most vulnerable. He warned of the growing gap between those affected by social problems such as war and those with the power to address them, and highlighted the need to "redefine compassion as a transformative force for change".
The event also featured opening remarks from Catalina Tejero, Dean of the IE School of Arts & Humanities; H.E. Jayant N. Khobragade, Ambassador of India to Spain; Blanca Jiménez, Councillor for Tourism, Events and City Branding of Valladolid City Council; and Sanjoy K. Roy, Managing Director of Teamwork Arts.
"We are honored to co-host the inaugural session of the 4th edition of JLF Valladolid Spain in Madrid. Creating opportunities for our students, faculty, and wider community to engage with leading voices from literature, culture, and global thought lies at the heart of the IE School of Arts & Humanities' commitment to dialogue across cultures and disciplines", said Catalina Tejero.
Recognized as the world’s leading forum for literary thought and debate, the Jaipur Literature Festival connects millions of readers around the world, extending its reach from its flagship gathering in India to a network of international editions in cities including New York, London, Toronto, Houston, Belfast, and Valladolid. Through open discussions that weave together storytelling, public policy, and culture, JLF serves as an essential platform for linguistic exchange and intercultural dialogue.
The collaboration between IE University and JLF Valladolid Spain reflects a shared commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding, intellectual curiosity, and meaningful engagement with the major challenges shaping social debate.
