Antonio Roldán

Toni Roldán-Monés is an economist who has worked at the intersection of research and public policy for more than 15 years. He recently joined IE University as an Assistant Professor of Public Policy. Toni conducts experimental research, primarily focused on the impact of technology on inequality, education, and productivity. His academic work has been published in leading economics journals, including the Journal of Public Economics and the American Economic Review (recently accepted). He served as a Visiting Professor in Practice at the School of Public Policy at the London School of Economics (2021–2023).

Before joining IE, Toni was the Director of the Esade Centre for Economic Policy (EsadeEcPol), a high-impact think tank dedicated to policy design and evaluation, which he founded in 2019. Between 2015 and 2019, he was an elected Member of the Spanish Parliament, where he served as Spokesperson for the Economy and Head of Policy at Ciudadanos (Cs), a centrist party. In Congress, he promoted numerous economic, social, and educational reforms and led a large team of economists in the party’s Economic Office. He also oversaw two Spanish budget negotiations and was part of the negotiating teams for two government agreements, with both PSOE and PP.

During the Eurozone crisis, Toni worked as a researcher at the European Institute of the London School of Economics (LSE) and served as lead analyst for Southern Europe at Eurasia Group, an American political risk consultancy. He also worked as a researcher at the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission (DG ECFIN) and as an economic advisor at the European Parliament. He writes regularly for El País, and his analyses are frequently cited in major international economic media, including the Financial Times, The Economist, and Bloomberg.

Toni holds a PhD from the Department of Social Policy at the London School of Economics, an MPA in Economic Policy Management from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), and an MPhil in Political Economy from the European Institute at LSE. He has co-authored three books on Spain’s economic reforms and contributed book chapters on a variety of European and Spanish policy issues. He received a scholarship from Fundación Caja Madrid for his studies in the United States.
