Sergio Verdugo

Sergio Verdugo is an Associate Professor of Law at IE Law School, where he teaches Constitutional Law, Human Rights, Comparative Jurisprudence, and AI, Law and Society. He is also the co-president of the International Society of Public Law and an Editor of the International Journal of Constitutional Law. Before joining IE University, he served as the Director of the Center for Constitutional Justice at the Universidad del Desarrollo School of Law in Chile.

Dr. Verdugo holds a doctorate (JSD) from New York University School of Law (NYU) and a master’s degree in law (LLM) from the University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a Master's in Public Law from P. Universidad Católica de Chile, where he won the “Alejandro Silva Bascuñán award, and an LLB from Universidad del Desarrollo, Chile.

He specializes in comparative constitutional law, constitutional theory and the theory of democracy. His research areas include the politics of constitutional courts, the connections between Constitutional Law and the political system, and constitution-making. He is the author of several publications in English and Spanish. His work has been featured in journals such as Law & Ethics of Human Rights, Columbia Journal of Transnational Law, International Journal of Constitutional Law (ICON), Hague Journal on the Rule of Law, Global Constitutionalism, the University of Miami Law Review, the European Yearbook of Constitutional Law, and Theoretical Inquiries in Law, among others.
