About me

My name is Aswin Subramanian Maheswaran, and I'm a third-year student at IE University pursuing a Bachelor in Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence. I chose this school because of its diverse student body. Meeting people from various cultural backgrounds has taught me the importance of understanding different perspectives and constantly learning new things. The innovative and practical courses give students hands-on experience in building projects. Currently, I live in Madrid, where I enjoy exploring new places and attending local events with friends.

Turning ideas into reality: a student's tech journey at IE University

Aswin is determined to leverage the power of technology. Armed with a growing arsenal of technical skills, his journey at IE University goes far beyond just coding. For Aswin, the most memorable part of the Bachelor in Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence has been the connections he's made and the diverse experiences he's encountered.

Since the program is based in both Madrid and Segovia, it has offered Aswin a dynamic, real-world environment that mirrors the fast-paced tech industry. These two cities provide diverse experiences, from urban exploration and engaging social events to a rich historical and cultural heritage. The bustling atmospheres in both places have allowed him to seize opportunities for development while forming life-changing friendships that have enriched his IE Experience.

Outside the classroom, Aswin is deeply involved in several extracurricular activities. He has been an active member of the IE Coding Club for over a year, where he has learned to organize workshops, create technical content and host speaker events.

The IE Robotics & AI Club has been another highlight, offering regular discussions on research papers and collaborative projects where he gained valuable hands-on experience. For anyone interested in learning about the latest trends in tech, he highly recommends the activities organized by TechIE and GDSC for their diverse technical insights on engaging topics.

Getting involved in these activities and communities has broadened Aswin's horizons and enhanced his ability to apply technological solutions to real-world challenges. He reflects, “These clubs and student organizations serve as the best resource for networking with fellow students and industry professionals, improving both academic and career prospects in your chosen field.”

Aswin originally chose this program at IE University to improve his technical skills, deepen his knowledge and learn how to turn his ideas into reality. But beyond classroom learning, he says this experience has significantly impacted his personal and professional growth.

“Computer science and AI is a great program for someone who wants to improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills,” says Aswin. “This program is diverse and focuses on different fields, such as software engineering, machine learning, data science and cloud computing, allowing students to explore and choose their own fields of interest.”

Projects and competitions have been pivotal in Aswin's academic journey, allowing him to apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges. One notable project involved developing a shoe sole circuit that converts kinetic energy from footsteps into electricity for charging devices. This venture deepened his understanding of physics and software integration.

Another highlight was the IE Sustainability Datathon with RyanAir, where Aswin combined data science with business strategies to address real-world industry problems. Such an experience honed his critical thinking skills, particularly in considering the business impact of technical solutions.

“The opportunity to explore artificial intelligence in-depth, especially now at the present moment, is amazing because of all the new trends and technologies being introduced and practiced by companies,” said Aswin, highlighting the program's relevance to current industry trends.

Currently working as a data science intern at a Spanish startup called Shapelets, Aswin is already putting his skills to the test in the real world. This role challenges him to step out of his comfort zone and acquire new techniques, accelerating his learning trajectory.

For prospective students, Aswin advises approaching the program with curiosity, as well as actively learning about the central ideas ahead of time. Similarly, he emphasizes the importance of understanding technical concepts deeply, starting from fundamentals and progressing to more advanced topics.

Once enrolled, Aswin encourages students to engage in peer discussions and not hesitate to communicate with professors about inquiries or project ideas. He believes this collaborative approach enhances the learning experience and deepens understanding of the subject matter.

Looking ahead, Aswin aims to enhance his machine learning and data science capacity while focusing on business fundamentals. He's set a goal to achieve fluency in Spanish by graduation, recognizing the importance of language skills in the global tech industry. As he approaches graduation, Aswin looks forward to future artificial intelligence opportunities where he can contribute to and create impactful projects.
