Gabrielle Elie
I’m Gabrielle, from Haiti. I was born in Port-au-Prince, where I lived for 15 years before moving to New York. I attended the Lycée Français de New York and am now pursuing the Dual Degree in Business Administration & Humanities at IE University. I enjoy fashion, dance, reading, and spending time with family and friends—and I always love trying new things. My journey has taught me to value diverse perspectives and the power of critical thinking in shaping a meaningful career.
"IE University was the only university that offered such a unique program, allowing me to combine both business and the humanities."
From Haiti to IE University: a humanities student’s path to global perspectives
Gabrielle Elie’s journey from Haiti to IE University embodies the transformative power of interdisciplinary education. Growing up in Port-au-Prince, she developed a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and creative expression, nurtured through 11 years of dance and a passion for literature. Moving to New York as a teenager further broadened her worldview, setting the stage for her decision to pursue a unique academic path at IE University.
What drew Gabrielle to IE University was the Dual Degree in Business Administration & Humanities—a program she describes as "the only one of its kind." This combined program allowed her to merge her interest in business with a passion for philosophy, history and cultural studies while living in both Segovia and Madrid. In her words, "IE University was the only university that offered such a unique program, allowing me to combine both business and the humanities. This opportunity not only broadened my academic scope but also gave me the chance to live in two different cities, discovering new places and cultures along the way."
The program’s curriculum, which blends courses like programming and ethics with classical humanities disciplines, has reshaped Gabrielle’s approach to problem-solving. She credits her studies with helping her see beyond transactional business decisions and understanding the cultural, historical and ethical contexts that influence global systems. "Courses in philosophy, history and literature have trained me to think critically, question assumptions and approach problems from multiple angles," she affirmed.
When asked to describe her IE Experience in one word, Gabrielle says it has given her the "unexpected." She highlights the rapid personal growth she's achieved through interactions with classmates from around the world, and the opportunities to participate in trips and excursions organized by the School of Humanities. These experiences have brought her closer to her peers and enriched her learning beyond the classroom. She explains, "So much happens in just a few months. You meet people from all over the world, dive into new classes and get the chance to go on amazing trips and excursions organized by IE School of Humanities. These experiences aren’t just about learning—they brought me and my classmates closer."
Looking ahead, Gabrielle aims to leverage her dual expertise in business and the humanities to pursue a career where she can apply her knowledge effectively. She believes that IE University has provided her with a strong foundation for her future endeavors.
