Shaping a future career in law with a focus on growth and diversity

Fourth-year IE University student Louiza Apostolidi was raised in Greece. Moving to Spain to pursue her legal studies marked her first real exposure to a multicultural environment—one that fueled her curiosity to explore even more of the world. "I decided to study the Bachelor of Laws at IE University because of its strong focus on comparative law," she says, "which I see as a major advantage as I want to work in an international or cross-border context."

What captivated her was the opportunity to join a legal program enriched by diverse perspectives. The LL.B.’s global outlook and dynamic environment aligned perfectly with her goals. Over the past four years, she’s embraced every opportunity to grow, both personally and professionally.

After completing a six-month internship at a law firm in Madrid, Louiza began her final semester by joining the Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) in London, an experience she describes as the perfect way to complement her undergraduate studies. "I’m excited to see my university become more involved in internationally recognized programs and offer its students the chance to further enrich their educational experience."

The CTLS brings together students and professors from top law schools around the world. For Louiza, the similarities between CTLS and IE University are clear—both institutions have similar learning environments, with a global community of students and faculty from some of the best universities around the world.

This semester, her primary goal is to absorb as much as possible—both through the courses she's taking and through meaningful interactions with a broad international community. Some of the subjects she’s especially drawn to include Internet Law, with its focus on US regulation and digital jurisdiction; Comparative Bioethics, which explores legal dimensions of medical practice; and Miscarriages of Justice, where she’s learning about the causes of wrongful convictions and how systems can be reformed.

She values the CTLS curriculum’s flexibility, which allows students to explore courses beyond their core focus. This interdisciplinary approach, she says, has helped her develop a broader understanding of global legal challenges.

As the first IE Law School student to participate in the CTLS program, Louiza is proud to represent her university on a global stage. Her experience underscores how well IE University students are prepared for international academic environments. From day one, she brought her background in cross-border issues and collaborative group settings to the table, skills honed throughout her time at IE University.

Outside of academics, Louiza is enjoying the vibrancy and exploration opportunities in London. She says, "studying here enhances my learning experience in ways that go beyond the classroom. There’s always something new to discover, whether it's an exhibition, a theater performance or an academic event." Meeting new people and navigating a new city have added "an invaluable layer" to her education and made her more adaptable—an essential skill in international law.

Looking to the future, Louiza plans to build her legal career internationally. This experience has given her an early insight into life in a multicultural legal hub and the tools to thrive in it. It’s also a personal milestone: a chance to test and strengthen the mindset needed to succeed in the fast-paced, globally connected world of international law.

For other students hoping to follow a similar path, Louiza encourages them to stay focused and open-minded. "Work hard academically and develop a strong work ethic," she advises. She also highlights the value of participating in social initiatives and extracurricular activities as it "helps integrate you into the IE Community and makes you a strong candidate to represent our university abroad."

Finally, she encourages students to reflect on the challenges they’ve overcome and how their studies connect to their future. In Louiza’s case, every step—from Athens to Madrid to London—has helped her grow, shaping a confident and global legal mindset she’s eager to carry over into her career.
