Miguel Estrada

About me

My name is Miguel Estrada and I’m from Mexico. Having recently completed my freshman year, I’m in the process of earning a Dual Degree in Economic and International Relations in Segovia. Until moving to Spain, I spent most of my life in Mexico City, with a brief year abroad in southern Germany. Before joining IE University, I attended high school at Northridge School, Mexico, where I took part in varsity soccer, orchestra, jazz band and Model United Nations.

"I love it here. The environment, the people, the classes. It is truly a wonderful experience."

Miguel Estrada

“Accept it without arrogance, let it go with indifference”

This quote from Marcus Aurelius is Miguel Estrada’s personal favorite. Approaching his sophomore year at IE University, this motivated student has multiple skills and passions. He’s now thriving in the Dual Degree in Economics and International Relations program.

Asked why he decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Spain, Miguel gives an honest response: “I was studying at university in Mexico City, but I was not fully satisfied.” Craving a more rigorous academic environment, Miguel eventually learned about IE University and discovered a program that he adores. Based on his interdisciplinary interests in economics, finance and politics, a dual degree was ultimately the perfect choice for him.

Miguel says his experience—from the campus environment, the students and professors, to the classes–has been truly wonderful. In addition to the enriching program, he appreciates IE University’s robust extracurricular culture. “The number of clubs at IE University is insane,” says Miguel. “You will always find someone who shares the same interests as you.” Miguel believes that IE University has something to offer every student. Over the course of his freshman year, he joined a number of clubs, including the Football Club, the Investment Club, the Book Club and the Latin American Club.

As for personal and professional training, Miguel can attest that IE University does an outstanding job at turning students into leaders. During his freshman year alone, he says that the strong internship system, resume builders and networking events have boosted his career opportunities. Through it all, he has found a solid community to help him grow both personally, academically and professionally.

One of the most rewarding experiences for Miguel at IE University was participating in the National Budget 2022 simulation. In collaboration with another student from the Dual Degree in Economics and International Relations, he generated a real-world example of fiscal policy in action. To provide insight into how economic and monetary policy and influence a country’s development, they prepared a mock budget for a fictional country with different ministries, using a theoretical framework to guide their decision-making processes.

Miguel even had valuable internship experience before joining the IE University community, specifically working with ING in Mexico City. During a business apprenticeship in June 2019, he learned the basics of the Bloomberg Terminal, as well as gaining a basic overview of the world economy.

Aligned with his Model United Nations experience from high school, Miguel also has some interesting certifications, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Primer. What’s more, he has studied Yale’s Financial Markets course, Wharton’s Business Foundations Specialization and Introduction to Economic Theories on Coursera.

As well as his academic interests such as mathematics, analytical skills and problem-solving, Miguel has varied hobbies. Not only is he a successful student but an avid soccer fan, a trained musician and a voracious reader. Like most college students, Miguel also enjoys spending time with his friends and going out for a night on the town after finishing his academic work. Segovia is quite a small and intimate city, so one way or another, he’s always running into people.

As for future aspirations, Miguel intends to graduate from IE University and then find work in the finance sector. Eventually, he’d like to earn a master’s degree. As he feels that IE University is truly focused on preparing students for the professional world, he’s confident about the postgraduate transition.
