During her visit in Madrid, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed met with students from IE School of Global and Public Affairs.

Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group, visited IE University on November 1, 2022. In the spirit of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 on global partnerships, both institutions have a regular collaboration to advance the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

Over the past four years, the United Nations and IE University have joint forces to train a new generation of leaders able to implement the 2030 Agenda, the UN’s roadmap towards a more sustainable world. The collaboration first took form of a Master in International Development, a program that offers an innovative approach to topics such as economic development, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, peace, and partnerships. The collaboration was afterwards expanded to other academic programs, research activities, and impact projects, involving 20 UN agencies and enhancing the learning experience of no less than 1,300 students.

During her visit in Madrid, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed met with students from IE School of Global and Public Affairs. Nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate students specializing in Global Affairs and International Development heard the Deputy Secretary-General’s insights on the advancements of the SDGs in light of the current global challenges. They also took the chance to ask about her extensive and inspirational career in the Development sector.

“We are delighted to welcome the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, to IE University in what constitutes another step in the strengthening of the partnership between our two institutions.”
Manuel Muñiz, Provost of IE University and Dean of IE School of Global and Public Affairs

“IE fully shares the UN's commitment to a more sustainable future. We strive every day to forward that vision and to make the 2030 Agenda a reality. We count on this effort with our faculty, our students and our capacity to convene local and global debates on key topics to this agenda. Academic institutions can and should be central players in the sustainability debate,” said Manuel Muñiz, Provost of IE University and Dean of IE School of Global and Public Affairs.

Ms. Amina J. Mohammed’s visit took place a few days ahead of the COP27 that will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. This annual conference gathers stakeholders from the public, private, and non-profit sectors to discuss solutions that combat climate change. IE University, in collaboration with the UN Joint SDG Fund, will take part in the COP27 with an event on the role of sovereign wealth funds in building a more prosper and sustainable future.
