High Comfort, Low Impact. Concepts from Buildings to Cities
Matthias Schuler. Transsolar, Managing Director
Matthias Schuler (born 1958 Stuttgart, Germany) received his professional degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Stuttgart in 1987. Schuler founded Transsolar in 1992, now a leading provider of consulting services for sustainable design strategies for buildings and cities. The firm has a strong technical focus and commonly performs highly sophisticated computational simulations for thermal, lighting, and other building systems in order to validate their innovative solutions. Schuler has worked with many well-known architects on high-profile projects, such as Herzog & De Meuron, Stephen Holl, Behnisch Behnisch and Partners, Jean Nouvel, Gehry Design Architects, Murphy/Jahn, and OMA. Recently his activities have moved beyond the building scale and he is now working on energy and comfort solutions at the urban master plan level, like the carbon-neutral Masdar development in Abu Dhabi in conjunction with Foster + Partners. In collaboration with Tetsuo Kondo, Schuler has recently inaugurated Cloudscapes, a spectacular installation at the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale 2010. Matthias Schuler is Adjunct Professor of Environmental Technology at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he has taught since 2001.
