IE University's extracurricular activities: Hiking - Camino Schmid
Saturday 15th October
Next Saturday the 15th of October we will offer a morning of hiking to all students and staff of IE University.
The Schmid Way is the marquee route of the Sierra de Guadarrama established at the beginning of the 20th century with the goal of connecting the Puerto de Navacerrada with the Valle de la Fuenfría in the municipality of Cercedilla. It was named after hiker Eduardo Schmid, member of the Real Sociedad Española de Alpinismo Peñalara, one of the pioneer associations that helped locals rediscover and become better educated about the Sierra de Guadarrama. The second part of the expedition takes place on an ancient road dated from the 1st century A.D. and originally built by the Romans to unite Segovia with Titulcia all the while providing a much needed supply route in its day to Puerto de la Fuenfría by crossing the Fuenfría and Valsaín valleys. The road is stoned and has variable width but was carefully constructed. Tracing its route, hikers cross over four ancient Roman bridges, still standing today, the objective of which was to disturb as little as possible the following brooks and streams: El Descalzo (this bridge in particular was recently restored), El Molino, La Venta, and the Enmedio.
The route is rated at low difficulty and takes approximately 3 hours to do at a total distance of 7 km. A bus will leave from the exterior entrance of the University Residence at 9:30 sharp and will pick everyone up at 15:00 hours to return to campus.
This activity is free however we kindly request confirmation of attendance by email to ivan.wong@ie.edu as soon as possible.
