Summary:
Located adjacent to the World Trade Centre site and an icon of US economic power, after 9/11, the New York Stock Exchange was identified as a likely target for terrorism. Immediate steps were taken to secure the area. This was initially accomplished through the rapid installation of armed security personnel, along with a vast array of jersey barriers, barricades, checkpoints and parked trucks.
The Financial District Security and Streetscape project looked at security devices as an amenity rather than a burden. By utilizing security programming to build public amenities that enhance the public space around one of New York’s most iconic building, this project balances the issues and contradictions of enabling vibrant streetscape while installing cutting-edge security in the densest urban condition of New York.
