Sixty years ago, the Spanish State sent orders to create population centers—in Spanish, called pueblos de colonización—in rural Extremadura. The townspeople were then tasked with cultivating the land to make it as workable as possible.
Casar de Miajadas was one of these pueblos. Its unique, radial layout was designed to facilitate population growth over time, but ultimately this goal was never achieved. Today, the town is too small and is in need of physical expansion. Capitalizing on its agriculturally rich land by bringing it within the town’s expanded borders will blur those conventional boundaries and attract younger visitors to Casar de Miajadas, allowing locals to share their history and culture while turning this small town into a center of cultural tourism in Spain.
