Form Follows Organism

Final Project for the Bachelor in Design, Class of 2021.

Freshwater is essential for our planet and yet we are using up this natural resource at an exponential rate. Currently only 2.5% of the earth water is fresh and 0.5% of the earth’s water is drinkable. The fashion industry thrives on fresh water use and is estimated to be using around 93 billion cubic meters per year. To put this into perspective it takes about 2,720 liters of water to make one cotton T-shirt - the same amount that a human being consumes in three years of their lifetime. With water scarcity on the rise possibly becoming even more expensive than oil and much of this water within the fashion industry going into the production phase, the project aims to rethink the current manufacturing system by looking into the production of biotextiles and the possibility of creating these using primarily salt water. Salt water is a much more abundant resource, given that 97.5% of the total volume of water on earth is salt water. Therefore biotextiles production with the use of saltwater is big design opportunity.
