IE School of Communication shares its expertise on media monitoring with Major european institutions investigating on science communication
The IE school of Communication was present at an international workshop in Sofia (Bulgaria) discussing the methodological issues and avenues in doing media monitoring. The workshop was organized by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in collaboration with the Bulgarian Academy of Science. Scholars and experts from major European institutions in science communication of Germany, Austria, England, Romania, Portugal, Bulgaria and Italy were present to the workshop.
The workshop "Mapping Societal Conversation of Science: Methodological Issues and Avenues" had the objective to bring together the major experts in the public understanding of science and in media monitoring so to learn on the various methods and techniques to do media content analysis.
Participants discussed how network analysis, cognitive semantic maps, co-occurrence analysis, codebooks , discourse analysis, metaphor analysis and critical discourse analysis might all be applied to improve the understanding of how science is debated nowadays by international mass media which set the agenda about science communication. IE School of Communication gave its contribution through the presence of Dr. Laura Illia, who presented the advantages and disadvantages to do co-occurrence analysis of text so to better understand what are the main themes that media cover in their articles.
Dr. Laura Illia is the new assistant professor of Corporate Communication at the IE School of Communication. She developed her expertise on media monitoring and co-occurrence analysis when she overseen two years research project at the Judge Business School (University of Cambridge) and London School of Economics. The project was on the topic of how firms operating in biotechnology develop an authorship on media discourses.
