IE University and the IIT organize an Architecture Workshop on Traditional Decorative Techniques
The technique of sgraffito of Segovia, a decoration based on whitewash and sand that covers the walls of a large part of the Spanish city buildings and one of the hallmarks of ornamental art practiced in the facades of Segovia from the Middle Ages and it is yet used is the focus of a workshop for IE University architecture students.
Besides students of IE School of Architecture and Design, a group of students from Illinois Institute of Technology-Chicago (IIT), one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the US, will participate in this course. During these days students will be able to exchange experiences with Architecture faculty on the Campus of Santa Cruz la Real.
The technical architect Ana Marazuela explained the nature of the sgraffito of Segovia and her long experience with this technique. Students were able to verify in situ the whole process of sgraffito from the hand of technicians from a company run by Julio Barbero, one of the best specialists in this traditional masonry craft technique who has worked on several historic buildings of Segovia .
The workshop, which runs until next Saturday, is being taught by Andrew Schachman from the Illlinios Institute of Technology College of Architecture, David Goodman, Director of Architecture at IE University, and the professors from IE School of Architecture, Romina Canna and Sara Hernández Velasco.
