IE University economist Rafael Pampillón presents his new book

Rafael Pampillón Olmedo, an economist at IE University, recently presented his new book Cuando los votantes pierden la paciencia at IE Tower, an analysis of the main economic changes and events of the last two centuries, with a special focus on the United States and the United Kingdom.

The event was attended by Ana Palacio and Cristobal Montoro, former Spanish foreign and finance ministers respectively, and Gayle Allard, an economist at IE University. During the presentation, the experts analyzed the economic challenges posed by the current global geostrategic situation in a debate moderated by journalist Carlos Salas.

When asked how the economy influences a country's politics, Pampillón noted:

“Changes in government are due more to the mistakes of previous rulers than to the merits of the victors. The proposals of the victors, however novel they may be, are not usually the cause of victory.”

Discussing the implications of the war in Ukraine, Ana Palacio argued: “In the European Union, we have lived in a world based on idealistic assumptions, underplaying or taking energy security for granted, concentrating on the energy transition and the green agenda. That's all very well, but that alone is not enough: it's utopian.”

Regarding the pandemic, Cristóbal Montoro pointed out: “Unfortunately the world is becoming divided, de-globalized, and this is causing many problems. Among other things, it has a huge influence on high inflation.”
