IE University student Eric Cuevas won the third prize for best speaker within the University Model Segib (MUS), a simulation of the Ibero-American Heads of State and Government which was held from the 10th to the 12th of April at the Poitiers campus of SciencesPo, a university focused on political education and international relations.

Eric Cuevas was part of the Debate team from IE University that participated in this competition, designed and executed by Latin American and European students who volunteered from SciencesPo, which also included conferences and artistic and cultural events.

The idea of participating in MUS came from the student Alejandro Polanco, who then was joined by his classmates Eric Cuevas, Nicolás Espinós, Wojtek Zaluska y Gabriel Salazar, all of them studying the double degree in Business Administration and Law. The participation of the Debate Club also benefited from the support of the Student Office at IE University.

The core activity of the University Model Segib (MUS) is a great act that simulates the Iberoamerican peaks, articulated in several debate tables. Each student represents a politician, an economist, a businessman or a social agent. In the case of IE University students, Alejandro Polanco represented the president of Spain Mariano Rajoy, while Eric Cuevas opted for the Minister of Economy Luis de Guindos.

The table covering economy discussed two topics: how to promote cooperation and collaboration between Latin American countries and how to create a competitive economic block in Latin America. The jury considered Eric Cuevas the third best speaker thanks to his ability of public speaking, the strength of his arguments, his convincing tone and for defending his opinion in the same way the Minister of Economy would have done. Eric Cuevas says it was a privilege and an honour to represent IE University in the debates of the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and that participation could have not been possible without the support of the Student Office.

The international recognition of the Debate Club joins other awards recently won by IE University Students. As in the case of student Ana Martinez Valls who recently won a prize awarded by the Head of Global Graduate Recruitment for the best presentation of projects during her internship at the Investment Nomura Bank in London. It was a competition of 15 students from universities such as Cambridge and Oxford.
