The new Copyright Act under debate at the Chair on Business Law: Perez-Llorca - IE

The IE- Pérez-Llorca Chair on Business Law held a session on the 18th of November that revolved around the new law on intellectual property which was recently approved by the Spanish Chamber of Deputies. Juan Antonio Orgaz, legal advisor of Discovery Communications for Spain and Portugal, was the lead speaker and participated in a conversation with Javier de la Cueva, intellectual property lawyer. The debate was moderated by Elena Veleiro, Counsel of the Pérez-Lorca Law Firm.

The three panelist expounded there different versions, yet complementary to each other, about the principal changes of the new law that will be effective from the 1st of January 2015. Juan Antonio Orgaz gave a brief explanation regarding the changes and underlined the most controversial issues that this norm entailed such as how is the new regulation affecting private copy. “A barrier that is now more restricting” is how Orgaz addressed it, which will compensate authors through the general government budgets.

The control and supervision of the work by management firms or the famous Google rate or the canon AEDE for the network news aggregators were other points of discussion.

On the one hand, Javier de la Cueva centered his discussion on the importance that intellectual property has in the scientific field and on the Spanish culture. He pointed out some interesting facts concerning the consumption in the entertainment sector and seeks for a broader system along the lines of the open access.

At the end of the discussion, the speakers took part of a debate with some of the members of the audience formed by experts from the contents industry, from the telecommunications and the rights of entertainment.
