Final Project for the Bachelor in Design, Class of 2021.
With my final project I aim to challenge the contemporarily held narrative and paradigm of common product packaging, which is that the core role and purpose of packaging is merely to protect, hold, cushion and conserve the product inside. But what if the packaging itself is equipped with an additional, real, purpose after having accomplished its task of packaging the product? In this project, it will be my objective to change the current perspective towards packaging by creating a package that itself can function as a product as to combat wastefulness and a squandering of resources otherwise associated with regular one-purpose packaging. The context in which I would like to pursue this is that of the Golf industry, which with steady market growth poses an attractive business sector in which to innovate. The current focus of golf equipment company’s is mostly devoted to improving performance therefore the packaging of clubs and balls has not changed in decades.
This is somewhat problematic as with the constant improvement of clubs and balls the users are forced to purchase new equipment more frequently resulting in more packaging waste. It is particularly Golf balls which are frequently bought, and due to their thoughtless packaging, a lot of unnecessary waste results. Combined with tees Golf balls make up more than one third of the annual Golf equipment sales. This adds up to 400.000.000 individual card bord boxes being thrown away.
As to address this suboptimal squandering of resources, I shall combine the two most frequently bought Golf items via repurposed packaging and substantially decrease associated waste thereof. Via designing a packaging that once having served its purpose of conveniently holding the Golf balls, and can then easily be repurposed into Golf tees, I will showcase the material efficiency that can be achieved when redesigning outdated packings.
