Future excavations in Italy at IE University
IE University professor Emilio Illarregui, held in Rome for tree days -19th to 22nd of November - a series of meetings with officials of the Soprintendenza archeologica per il lazio in their Pompey headquarters. Mr. Illarregui made substantial improvements in the project of installing an IE Archeology Unit in the imperial Villa of Palestrina for 2010, close to the Italian capital.
The Imperial Villa of Palestrina is an massive Augustan complex subsequently transformed by the emperors Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius. On the outskirts of Rome lies the sanctuary of Fortuna Primigesta, one of the greatest divination centers of Italy. The richness of this ancient sanctuary was one of the most visited site during the Roman Republican era. After the civil wars of Marius and Sulla the complex has undergone a series of destructions and changes that led to its abandonment as a sanctuary and home to major residential centers of emperors and important people of the High Empire. This project, held at IE University, will see the participation of students and academics of the Santa Cruz la Real Campus as well as the University of La Sapienza of Rome, University of Casino, University of Rovira i Virgili University and many other institutions and organizations from various countries.
